I had a lovely time exhibiting my paintings and working as a visiting artist giving a lecture and individual artist critiques.<br />

The Sinclair Galleries at Coe College are two separate gallery spaces that run concurrent exhibitions. Jessica Teckemeyer had a solo exhibition in the other gallery, and we shared our opening and closing exhibitions. I promise we didn't coordinate our clothing for our artist lectures. She's got really excellent work. I'd highly recommend checking out her website here: <a href="http://www.jteckemeyer.com/" target="_blank">Jessica Teckemeyer</a>CassieMariehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10311320787197493016noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1848228051954857324.post-54958337546352735022015-11-04T09:05:00.002-08:002017-10-03T13:37:56.961-07:00Rhino. Underpainting. Brushes. Etc. I have a ton of brushes. Most of them are cheap, a few set me back $20-$30. I love having a variety to choose from for each stage of a painting. <br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/cassiemarieedwards/22099668003/in/datetaken/" nbsp="" title="Untitled"><img alt="Untitled" height="356" src="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/616/22099668003_8947a74c42_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script></div>
<br />
I've been keeping momentum going in the studio. I just started this little rhinoceros a few nights ago. I'll start a larger painting within the next few nights too, but I like having these mid-sized paintings to work on in between the larger works. The figurine for this piece is so small and hard to see for painting the details. It will be a challenge for sure.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/cassiemarieedwards/22707251532/in/datetaken/" nbsp="" title="Untitled"><img alt="Untitled" height="640" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5626/22707251532_1044132d3d_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script></div>
<br />
I also picked up this little guy last week. I have been avoiding the thrift shops for the most part since we moved because we are really trying to get rid of a bunch of stuff, but every once and a while I'll sneak out to look for something really specific.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">

<br />
Well, I'm off to work in the studio! And again - if any of you are in Minneapolis this weekend (Nov 7th) please stop by the opening of my exhibition at Soo Visual Arts Center and say hi! I'd love to see you! PS - they are also unveiling a couple of new limited edition prints for purchase there - so be the first to see which ones will be released!<br />
<br />
<br />CassieMariehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10311320787197493016noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1848228051954857324.post-45535692152673099592015-11-01T10:42:00.000-08:002015-11-01T10:42:00.146-08:00In the StudioWhile getting the house into a functional state, I've also been plugging away in the studio. <br />
<br />
I finished all of the work for my next show before we'd moved. When you paint with oil paints, you've got to really push your deadlines for exhibitions back because the works need time to dry and in my case be varnished with an initial varnish so the surface appears nice and uniform.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/cassiemarieedwards/20288273243/in/datetaken/" nbsp="" title="Putting the last layer on this guy today. Almost done."><img alt="Putting the last layer on this guy today. <br />
I'd started this little cardinal before we'd moved, and just had to put one more thin layer of paint over the whole thing to really solidify the colors. The red I used for this painting was cadmium red which is very slow drying. I had to transport this guy half-dry from SD to WI, and I'm glad he survived the transit without getting distorted!<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/cassiemarieedwards/22402571910/in/datetaken/" nbsp="" title="Untitled"><img alt="Untitled" height="500" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5791/22402571910_3f037cd811.jpg" width="500" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script></div>
<br />
Last week I sent out the pieces for my next exhibition titled Conscious Objects which opens the 7th of November in Minneapolis, MN at the Soo Visual Arts Center. It is always a big job to pack and ship work, as you have to be prepared for it to be dropped off the side of a truck or stepped on - hah. Here's a sneak peak of this happy squirrel before he was cased in many layers of plastic, foam, and cardboard. If you are in Minneapolis, please check out the work - it will be up for the next month + - here is the press release: <a href="http://www.soovac.org/index.php/shows/view/conscious_objects_work_by_cassie_marie_edwards_sarah_knobel_and_kate_shanno/" target="_blank">Conscious Objects at Soo VAC</a><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/cassiemarieedwards/21968007254/in/datetaken/" nbsp="" title="Untitled"><img alt="Untitled" height="640" src="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/660/21968007254_8f39e15777_z.jpg" width="480" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script></div>
<br />
Otherwise, I've been able to put in some good hours in the studio - both painting, and organizing/photographing/doing paperwork. I'm starting to get back into the groove, and kick out some work.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/cassiemarieedwards/22590495945/in/datetaken/" nbsp="" title="Untitled"><img alt="Untitled" height="640" src="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/622/22590495945_f238ca9fde_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script></div>
<br />
This one has been especially fun with the complexity of the hair to go along with the reflective surface. Plus, how can you resist this guy's face?<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/cassiemarieedwards/21087395884/in/datetaken/" nbsp="" title="Untitled"><img alt="Untitled" height="640" src="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/572/21087395884_e27db9832d_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script></div>
<br />
I've also been really trying to refine how I prepare my surfaces - especially for my works on panel. I'd been gessoing them with a roller and light sanding between layers, but I wasn't really 100% happy with the slight surface texture. It worked great for blending paint, but it was driving me nuts when it came to fine details. So I switched up my method of application and my sanding process, and made a batch of ultra smooth panels for some of my next paintings.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/cassiemarieedwards/22564618306/in/datetaken/" nbsp="" title="Untitled"><img alt="Untitled" height="640" src="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/582/22564618306_3e51cdab63_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script> </div>
<br />
These are underpaintings on those panels - a continuation of the series 'faux landscapes' that I've been working on the last few years. I'm pushing these to be a little bit more abstract than the some of the others I've done in the past. I'm not sure if that is the direction I'll keep pushing them, but in the meantime I'm having fun. <br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/cassiemarieedwards/22425531790/in/datetaken/" nbsp="" title="Untitled"><img alt="Untitled" height="640" src="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/570/22425531790_c1813d2ccf_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script></div>
<br />
I'm loving the surfaces so far though - they are divinely smooth, and the paint is gliding like a dream. It is nice when you get to the point where you don't have to fight the materials to get them to do what you want.CassieMariehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10311320787197493016noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1848228051954857324.post-44222967950991222982015-11-01T09:45:00.002-08:002015-11-01T10:01:07.043-08:00New House & New Projects<div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script></div>
I'm attempting to catch up a little bit with my blogging. I was off the radar for a while with the move. We've been packing and unpacking while balancing a ton of personal projects (exhibitions, music gigs, record releases, studio upgrades). Nate has started teaching classes at UWO as their new Director of Recording Technology and I've been teaching online and continuing my studio practice while slowly renovating our new place. Speaking of that, here's our new (to us) house:<br />
<div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUSw9A_SO9UIk7SnANKOj1LsaMmt4iu8sCPTtI34-4qWnUz9P9T2ZZv4IaH7BQQAwNnFMb4Yb9NUSYlbskCb2f8m0TYVdqat_4otU4k7EEsUmMhftugoR4zpBol_Zwr75AyrqcmB4vsZk/s1600/Screen+Shot+2015-11-01+at+10.34.21+AM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="277" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUSw9A_SO9UIk7SnANKOj1LsaMmt4iu8sCPTtI34-4qWnUz9P9T2ZZv4IaH7BQQAwNnFMb4Yb9NUSYlbskCb2f8m0TYVdqat_4otU4k7EEsUmMhftugoR4zpBol_Zwr75AyrqcmB4vsZk/s400/Screen+Shot+2015-11-01+at+10.34.21+AM.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
We have a ton of plans to make the exterior a little bit more inviting. :) We'll be adding shutters, painting the olive green a different color, and adding a little landscaping to liven things up. It is a 60's house with a great layout.<br />
<br />
We've done a lot of work to the interior so far (and have a lot to do still too). After we got our kitchen/living room/bedroom unpacked, I started on my new studio space. It is about the same size as my last studio, so I have to be pretty inventive with how I arrange and organize the space to maximize functionality. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/cassiemarieedwards/21969853683/in/datetaken/" nbsp="" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Untitled"><img alt="Untitled" height="480" src="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/598/21969853683_d576dc029a_z.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script><br />
I moved around some existing wall shelves, and built some shelving in the small closet. I made the closet shelving specifically to hold the bins that I store my supplies in and the most common size canvasses that I use. I also built and put up a pegboard to store all of those things that I use a lot, but don't want out in my workspace. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/cassiemarieedwards/22403035510/in/datetaken/" nbsp="" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Untitled"><img alt="Untitled" height="300" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5665/22403035510_07c07efd4a_z.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script><br />
Building the braces for the shelves.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/cassiemarieedwards/21969789313/in/datetaken/" nbsp="" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Untitled"><img alt="Untitled" height="640" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5751/21969789313_32c78307af_z.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script><br />
The 'finished' product (albeit still not entirely organized). I think I spent around $30 on all of the materials along with some supplies I already had. I'm loving having these custom shelves. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/cassiemarieedwards/22577119832/in/datetaken/" nbsp="" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Untitled"><img alt="Untitled" height="640" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5826/22577119832_2bbf985834_z.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script><br />
So as of now the studio is functional. It still needs a lot of work - namely painting and organizing - but at least for now I can still continue to paint while I slowly get to those jobs. <br />
<br />
I've also done a lot of painting on the first floor, and replaced the window treatments with curtains.<br />
Kitchen Before:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/cassiemarieedwards/22602157371/in/datetaken/" nbsp="" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Untitled"><img alt="Untitled" height="500" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5708/22602157371_98e3f3caa9.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/cassiemarieedwards/21968171464/in/datetaken/" nbsp="" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Untitled"><img alt="Untitled" height="500" src="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/735/21968171464_9766cebd3b.jpg" width="375" /></a></div>
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script><br />
<br />
The blinds in the kitchen were old, dirty, and blocked the view into the backyard. The house has a lot of windows, and we really want a bright kitchen, so I chose to go with simple white curtains. I also painted the ceilings with flat white paint, and the walls a really light neutral grey. The kitchen feels a lot more modern and airy now. We've still got to paint the cupboards and replace the light fixtures.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a data-flickr-embed="false" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/cassiemarieedwards/22564626476/in/datetaken/" nbsp="" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Untitled"><img alt="Untitled" height="500" src="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/639/22564626476_22d71230cb.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm also toying with the idea of painting all of the trim white, but I'm not sure yet. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>

We've also painted the living room and replaced some of the curtains. We've still got the replace the godawful faded olive/teal floral carpeting though - I cannot wait to get that out of here. We haven't decided if we are going to put in different carpet, or extend the pergo floors from the kitchen/hallway into the living room so the first floor has cohesive flooring. </div>

We were glad to get rid of the 'baby puke' yellow walls, and put in a nice neutral grey. I like to change up the artwork and the blankets/throw pillows a lot in the house, so the grey walls let me change the feel of the room without having to repaint every time I redecorate. </div>

One of the most satifying projects thus far has been ripping out the carpet on the second floor hallway. I can't believe the prior owners covered these beautiful hardwoods! I think the carpets turned off a lot of potential buyers though, so I'm counting this as a total win. </div>

We've still got a lot of work cut out for us though - painting, curtains, some floors, etc. I made a 'little' list of all of the projects left to complete. I'm looking forward to having things a little bit further along so it really starts to feel like our space. </div>

<br />
Recently my husband accepted a job at UW-Oshkosh as the Director of the School's Recording program. We'll be packing up and moving to Wisconsin sometime late in the summer or early fall. We're already neck-deep in packing and prepping our house to sell while continuing to work on our personal artistic works. I'm prepping for multiple exhibitions, and Nate is promoting his newest album. We have a knack for unintentionally overlapping time-consuming commitments! I'll be taking a break from teaching in-person next semester to focus on my studio work and teach solely online. <br />
<br />
We'll really miss our South Dakota family though - we've made such great friendships while living here over the last five years that will be hard to leave. I'll also really miss my students at DSU - they are a great bunch! But, we're familiar with the commute from WI to SD, so I know we'll be traveling back to visit. We both attended UW-Oshkosh for our undergrad degrees though, and have kept in touch with a lot of our friends in the area, so at least we'll be moving someplace that is familiar this time around.<br />
<br />
Keep your fingers crossed for us that our move will go smoothly and will time out well. :) To our South Dakota friends: you'll always have a place to stay/visit in WI.CassieMariehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10311320787197493016noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1848228051954857324.post-30713266957668305532015-08-13T17:26:00.001-07:002015-08-13T17:26:50.856-07:00Exhibition: Strange Atmosphere at the Jazz Gallery Center for the ArtsHere are some installation shots and the postcard for the three-person exhibition titled 'Strange Atmosphere' at the <a href="http://www.riverwestart.org/jazz-gallery-exhibitions.html" target="_blank">Jazz Gallery Center for the Arts </a>that I exhibited my work at last month alongside the wonderful artists <a href="http://www.rachelquirk.com/" target="_blank">Rachel Quirk</a> and <a href="http://zinamussmann.com/" target="_blank">Zina Mussmann</a>:<div>

It was so nice to catch so many of my art friends in SD - I was totally humbled by the stellar attendance and kind words that floated through the gallery that night. I'm super thankful to <a href="http://www.zachdeboer.com/" target="_blank">Zach DeBoer</a> for his support through Exposure Gallery, and his great arrangement of the many paintings I brought to fill the space.<br />

I was so busy that night I totally forgot to take pictures! Thankfully Exposure and some other friends had that covered for me. <br />
I finished the underpainting on this little jackalope painting last night - it is a commissioned piece for a friend of mine who searched high and low for the perfect flocked jackalope. I'm hoping to knock out the rest of the painting next week after this layer dries. <br />

I'm also going out on a limb and trying to make some small figurine sculptures of my own. I just bought some additional sculpture tools, so this should be a lot easier the next time around. <br />

I'm toying with the idea of casting these in resin, and making a bunch of blank figurines. I may also be going crazy.<br />

Now I just have to figure out the best way to cast these in silicone, and look for a good resin to work with.CassieMariehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10311320787197493016noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1848228051954857324.post-80266582955130960262015-04-07T09:46:00.001-07:002015-04-21T07:57:46.806-07:00Slow Moving Glaciers<div>

I've had one of those semesters where I'm trying to juggle working on about 2 million things at once. I'm making slow progress on all of my studio projects, but it feels like I'm standing still. I'm not someone who enjoys stagnancy. One of the hard things about being an artist and working as an adjunct in academia is that there are very few ways to truly feel accomplished. As an artist, there are always bigger fish to fry (and always lots of rejection), and as an adjunct, there is always the uncertainty of your job disappearing each semester despite your best teaching efforts. I've been yearning for more stable ground the last few years, and am doing a lot of thinking about what my next move will be. I'll keep you updated, but at the present moment I'm just trying to keep my head above water.</div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In good news, I've been selling a few paintings lately to some collectors I really admire, working on some commissions, and recently travelled to Indianapolis to present at the national FATE conference with some colleagues from our neighboring university SDSU. I loved visiting the IMA - they had a great collection. Sometimes a trip to an art museum can re-energize your art-making in a profound way. </div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I also really enjoyed the keynote speaker of the conference, <a href="http://waynewhiteart.com/" target="_blank">Wayne White</a>. I totally recommend watching the documentary that focused on his work, <a href="http://buy.beautyisembarrassing.com/" target="_blank">Beauty is Embarrassing</a>. I think seeing an artist's development over time is really important. One of the things he addressed in his talk was how he always followed and produced things that interested him and caught his attention - with no mind to whether or not they would 'amount' to anything. Yet, even these things that he thought were strange (puppet making, installation, historical reproductions) all came back into his work in really important ways as his career progressed. </div>

<div>
I'm hoping to show this documentary to my students. One of the things I try to do as an educator is introduce a ton of new techniques and challenge students to follow their interests. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it will encourage them to keep experimenting.</div>

I've started working on a bunch of small oil paintings to get back on track. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/cassiemarieedwards/16469306832" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Blocking in the first layer of this little block painting. by Cassie, on Flickr"><img alt="Blocking in the first layer of this little block painting." height="640" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7412/16469306832_d0107bb561_z.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Blocking in the first layer.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/cassiemarieedwards/16454374616" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Second layer down on this little guy. One more to go. by Cassie, on Flickr"><img alt="Second layer down on this little guy. One more to go." height="640" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7360/16454374616_d61b7c602c_z.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The second layer is finished, I've got one more to go to add more detail and refine the gradients/ edges.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/cassiemarieedwards/15855593964" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Starting the underpainting on this guy today. by Cassie, on Flickr"><img alt="Starting the underpainting on this guy today." height="640" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7428/15855593964_e84bf254c0_z.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Started this one from a tiny maquette made from paper and a metallic pipe cleaner. Note: Metallic pipe cleaners are tough to paint!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/cassiemarieedwards/16477217721" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Kapow. Underpainting blocked in. by Cassie, on Flickr"><img alt="Kapow. Underpainting blocked in." height="640" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7442/16477217721_9ea59c98df_z.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
This is the second layer - I've got one more layer to go on this one to flatten out the forms and sneak in some insane detail on the pipe cleaner lightening.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/cassiemarieedwards/16312294677" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="First layer done on this one. by Cassie, on Flickr"><img alt="First layer done on this one." height="640" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7428/16312294677_fedf8ef616_z.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
This one still needs one more layer. I kind of love how it is turning out so far. I used craft foam to build the little maquette for this one and foresee making more of these. I like the combination of simplicity and realism happening in this painting.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/cassiemarieedwards/16310954068" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="G'night. by Cassie, on Flickr"><img alt="G'night." height="640" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7386/16310954068_d459748208_z.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
And, last but not least, a 'lone cloud' painting. I just blocked this one in last night. <br />
<br />
I like having a bunch of paintings to jump around between. It helps me to stay focused and energized. If I run into a wall with one painting, I've always got another one I can turn to to stay motivated and engaged. <i>Untitled - 11x14" - Watercolor, Gouache, and Pastel on Paper</i></div>
<br />
I've been working quite a bit on some smaller pieces in the studio lately. After I finished a marathon oil painting session for my last exhibition I think I just needed to decompress a little bit so I started working on a bunch of these smaller works.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/cassiemarieedwards/16182817120" title="G'night. by Cassie, on Flickr"><img alt="G'night." height="640" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7284/16182817120_95a2b178f3_z.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>Midas - 6 x8" - Watercolor on Paper</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I'm not sure where I'm going with these paintings, but I'm learning a lot from each one. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/cassiemarieedwards/16359329595" title="Working on shiny things in the studio. by Cassie, on Flickr"><img alt="Working on shiny things in the studio." height="640" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7396/16359329595_b9c2e187eb_z.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I've got about 12 of these little works in progress. I always enjoy having a lot of pieces going at once - I don't think it is possible to get stuck or creatively blocked that way. </div>

I'm also totally geeking out about my <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00E0IBKLQ/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00E0IBKLQ&linkCode=as2&tag=cassi0e-20&linkId=75IE3M6SAIBJW77H">Juicer</a><img alt="" border="0" src="http://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=cassi0e-20&l=as2&o=1&a=B00E0IBKLQ" height="1" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" /> that I recently bought. I've been trying to kick my migraines, drink less coffee, and eat healthier this last month. Every afternoon I make myself a juice with one fruit and a ton of veggies. I'd whole-heartedly recommend it!CassieMariehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10311320787197493016noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1848228051954857324.post-7592409088433580242015-02-02T20:56:00.001-08:002015-02-02T21:02:14.740-08:00Exhibit at Northern State UniversityA few weeks ago I installed my work in the Isaac Lincoln Gallery at Northern State University in Aberdeen, SD. While there I also met with students to give a lecture on how I use social media as an artist and gave a gallery talk about my current body of work. I had a blast, and am thankful to the Art Department for having me as their guest. <br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Here are some shots from the exhibition:</div>

<div>
Arranging work - this can be a surprisingly tough task - especially when considering that the figurine paintings always have a 'direction' that they face. </div>

<div>
The lovely show cards that they designed:</div>

I've just finished the last few paintings that I'll be including in an exhibit I'm installing at Northern State University next week. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/cassiemarieedwards/15437972523" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Planning out my next solo show at Northern State University that will be up Jan-March. <br />
As you may have guessed, I'm a pretty insane planner. For most of the shows I put together I like to plot out how many pieces I'll be bringing, and get a good sense of the space by making a mock-up of the interior. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I've also been tending to the business end of art-making; photographing and editing paintings, organizing finances, updating my website (almost done), and applying for more shows/opportunities.<br />
<br />
I'm hoping to take a little break once school starts back up and catch up on the relaxing that I put off over break! Wish this workaholic luck!CassieMariehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10311320787197493016noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1848228051954857324.post-68132473222801705862015-01-11T18:32:00.002-08:002015-01-11T18:33:57.341-08:00Three Small Watercolor Paintings<br />

Nate is in the middle of recording his next album, and I'm in the middle of making work for my next show. Our weekends have been filled with side-jobs, gigs, and prepping for school. October always ends up being one of the busiest months of the year for both of us.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/cassiemarieedwards/15449270479" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Untitled by Cassie, on Flickr"><img alt="Untitled" height="640" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3946/15449270479_208cf02247_z.jpg" width="564" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Last weekend Nate had two gigs and I participated in Studio 301 at the Washington Pavilion in Sioux Falls. This is my third year participating in the event, and I always feel both accomplished and exhausted after it is finished. During the event, which features 35 regional artists, artists are challenged to complete an artwork in one day. I worked on a 12x16" oil painting of a horse figurine, and just barely finished it within the allotted time.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/cassiemarieedwards/15006888364" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Finished my piece at Studio 301 at the Washington Pavilion. by Cassie, on Flickr"><img alt="Finished my piece at Studio 301 at the Washington Pavilion." height="640" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3937/15006888364_4a77fb1c37_z.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The finished piece will be exhibited for the next few months in the main gallery at the Washington Pavilion.<br />
<br />
I'm almost done with this guy too:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/cassiemarieedwards/14975355943" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Almost done with this guy. He's been such a patient model. by Cassie, on Flickr"><img alt="Almost done with this guy. He's been such a patient model." height="640" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5612/14975355943_6fca62424c_z.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
He's been such a patient model. Sometimes I can finish a piece in a few weeks, and other times it drags on for months. This one has been the latter situation. I'm 99% finished with the painting and will soon fill this space with another figurine.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/cassiemarieedwards/15553981006" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Studio night tonight. Perfect evening for working on the porch. by Cassie, on Flickr"><img alt="Studio night tonight. <br />
I also am working on the second layer of this huge painting. Soon I'll have to bring it inside as the porch is getting a bit too cold to paint in.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/cassiemarieedwards/15402350969" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="When my mind is busy it helps to make these. 4x6" by Cassie, on Flickr"><img alt="When my mind is busy it helps to make these. 4x6"" height="640" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5611/15402350969_45a41f6704_z.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
In addition to the oil paintings, I've been making a bunch of small abstract pieces. I cut down scraps leftover from other paintings and play around with color, form, space, layering, textures, etc. They are a nice meditative break in between the larger paintings and are helpful to work on when I get the urge to create something but don't have a chunk of time large enough to dedicate to working in oil.<br />
<br />
I also celebrated my 30th birthday this month. With it I'm trying to organize/prioritize/plan what I want out of the next few years. I almost always look at birthdays as a time to take stock of what is important, what is working, what isn't, and make changes for the better. Wish me luck! I've been a bit reclusive this month as school is in full swing, and I've got some larger exhibits coming up that I'm making work for. Here's a shot of a few things going on in my studio currently: </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/cassiemarieedwards/15239428089" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="G'night. by Cassie, on Flickr"><img alt="G'night." height="500" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3932/15239428089_55760d3f5b.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm midway through with a few larger pieces; a strange cat, and a big brass fish (which I've been wanting to start for almost a year now!). They are progressing slowly but surely. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/cassiemarieedwards/15077152499" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Working. by Cassie, on Flickr"><img alt="Working." height="500" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5562/15077152499_6169d1f4ae.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here's the drawing for the fish - I do it on paper first and then transfer it through to the canvas once I work out the placement and value setup. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/cassiemarieedwards/15360368411" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Scored some great figurines this last weekend!! by Cassie, on Flickr"><img alt="Scored some great figurines this last weekend!!" height="500" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3850/15360368411_d465ca9675.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I've also been collecting a few more figurines. Note to self: you must finish the four you have in-progress before doing these! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/cassiemarieedwards/15322124776" title="Demo wall for figure drawing. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Teaching is going well. Here's a peek into my demo board for figure drawing. I've got some great students this semester and both of my in-person classes seem to really mesh well and contribute nicely to the classroom environment. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/cassiemarieedwards/15301913296" title="One more. :) by Cassie, on Flickr"><img alt="One more. :)" height="500" src="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2942/15301913296_90a131da74.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Gardening has been slightly neglected this fall due to shows/school - BUT one of my peonies miraculously grew and bloomed! Unfortunately right after I took this picture, I bumped in to the leaves and they all fell off.... </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/cassiemarieedwards/15093461669" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Found a friend in the garden. by Cassie, on Flickr"><img alt="Found a friend in the garden." height="500" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5585/15093461669_0e42aec04b.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I also found this huge toad in the zucchini patch. I'm going to give him credit for keeping the vine borers at bay this year so our zucchini crop finally produced! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/cassiemarieedwards/15453424015" title="I love October nights. by Cassie, on Flickr"><img alt="I love October nights." height="500" src="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2948/15453424015_c69324ac4b.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Two days ago we had our first hard freeze, and I pulled out most of the rest of the garden. Winter is coming on fast. Fall is my favorite season, so I hope winter doesn't arrive too fast. </div>

<div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/cassiemarieedwards/15260544875" title="In the studio this afternoon. by Cassie, on Flickr"><img alt="In the studio this afternoon." height="640" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3919/15260544875_81dbb62c4e_z.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
</div>
<div>
This duck will be traveling to the Greenpoint Terminal Gallery in Brooklyn, NY for a show curated by my pal <a href="http://www.westernexhibitions.com/christian/images.htm" target="_blank">Ryan Travis Christian</a> in October. Check out his stellar artwork if you haven't already seen it!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/cassiemarieedwards/14985619070" title="In the studio. by Cassie, on Flickr"><img alt="In the studio." height="640" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3891/14985619070_013dda3e4b_z.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
</div>
<div>
I'm also working on a second duck figurine... I couldn't help it. :)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/cassiemarieedwards/15056377611" title="Massive studio organization happening tonight. by Cassie, on Flickr"><img alt="Massive studio organization happening tonight." height="640" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5568/15056377611_816f00fec1_z.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
</div>
<div>
Alongside the oil paintings I'm also slowly printing an edition of prints. I've dedicated a studio wall to the linocut prints. I'm thinking about saving up for a small relief press to expedite this process (currently I'm printing these by hand with a wooden spoon - it works, but it is slow and may kill my shoulder). </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/cassiemarieedwards/14944619819" title="Students are working on their first self-portraits in figure drawing this week at DSU. by Cassie, on Flickr"><img alt="Students are working on their first self-portraits in figure drawing this week at DSU." height="640" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3872/14944619819_8a3ea80531_z.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
</div>
<div>
My figure drawing students this semester are off to a great start - I've got all animation majors, so I'm working to create projects and exercises that really resonate with their specialization. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/cassiemarieedwards/15251258125" title="In figure drawing today we did an animated gesture drawing - they did 8 frames of animation and then animated them using their phones. Fun!" height="640" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3915/15251258125_70801ef74c_z.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
</div>
<div>
On Monday I had them do an animated gesture drawing - they did 8 'frames' of drawings of their hands in a sequence, and then we used our phones to animate them using the 'Stop Motion Studio' app. It was fun, and a good trial run for next week when I hope to do this same exercise with both the male and the female drawing models. </div>

Strangely enough, I think this summer has been busier than the school year? I've been getting a bunch of work together for an exhibit in Milwaukee next month at Greymatter Gallery, trying to add to my illustration portfolio, and massively reorganizing our house all at once. <br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I built and primed a bunch of new surfaces, and cut a bunch of homasote panels (for taping/stretching watercolors) at the start of summer.<br />
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/cassiemarieedwards/14288324453" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Today: cut a bunch of new homosote panels and stretching/ priming canvas. by Cassie, on Flickr"><img alt="Today: cut a bunch of new homosote panels and stretching/ priming canvas." height="500" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3789/14288324453_7df196daf1.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
We finally moved our amazing $50 thrifted dining set onto the porch, and ever since I've been working out there to take advantage of the cool breezes and lovely light while painting. </div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/cassiemarieedwards/14251845741" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="I've been cleaning and reorganizing like a mad woman. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Rascal also enjoys our porch time. </div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I'll be sharing a bunch of the finished images of these paintings once my show is up, but in the meantime here are some sneak peeks. </div>

</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In between making oil paintings for the Milwaukee show, I've also been working on a ton of little food illustrations, here's one of my latest ones: </div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/cassiemarieedwards/14174394329" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Working on more junkfood illustrations this afternoon. #illustration #art #painting #junkfood #gouache #holbein #watercolor #cassiemarieedwards by Cassie, on Flickr"><img alt="Working on more junkfood illustrations this afternoon. #illustration #art #painting #junkfood #gouache #holbein #watercolor #cassiemarieedwards" height="500" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3907/14174394329_184d88d70e.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
There are a few more food illustrations on Behance: <a href="https://www.behance.net/cassiemarie" target="_blank"> CassieMarie </a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>

Last but not least I've carved another linoleum block. I'm kind of starting to get addicted to these. They are seriously fun to carve. </div>

<br />
We just got back from a much needed mini-vacation. As you may have noticed, the blog has been a little bit sparse lately. My day-job (adjunct teaching) was really tough last semester. I was busy, super stressed, and felt like I was hanging on for dear life and completely overworked between teaching and keeping up with my studio work. As soon as school stopped, full time studio work commenced. This was our first break in a long time.<br />
<br />
We met our friends John and Heidi out in the Black Hills for some fishing, music playing, painting, and camping fun. We love having another artist/musician couple friend to commiserate with. :) Here are some shots from our stay at Sheridan Lake. <br />

We really roughed it food-wise. Tortellini and Wine.<br />

<br />
Heidi and I caught all of the fish. John was a champ and cleaned them like a pro. Nate caught a wonderful pine tree.<br />

<br />
John's cast iron cooking prowess was greatly appreciated. Also- we had the genius idea to grill bean/cheese quesadillas on the fire. Best. Idea. Ever.<br />

I had a chance to clear my head a bit and paint which was great and much needed. These are the pieces I worked on over the last four days. I really enjoy plein air painting - it is such a different approach than much of my other studio work, and so instantly gratifying. <br />

I hope you are all having a chance to relax and reflect this summer too. CassieMariehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10311320787197493016noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1848228051954857324.post-3501319588919589302014-03-16T09:51:00.000-07:002014-03-16T09:52:01.469-07:00In the Studio and the ClassroomWe are at the end of our 'spring break' - I insert the sarcasm because by the time we actually get grading and catch up work done - it is really the equivalent of a long weekend - hah. :) My parents came to visit from Wisconsin for the first part of break, and then we buckled down and did a grading marathon this week. I am all caught up on grading which means I had all of yesterday to work in my studio.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/cassiemarieedwards/13178525185/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Just finished this dude. :) by cassiemarie, on Flickr"><img alt="Just finished this dude. :)" src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3750/13178525185_6a8b829e96_o.jpg" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I got this guy done - I had previously done a small watercolor of this one, and had to do an oil painting as well. :) It was a gift from my G-ma Joanne.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/cassiemarieedwards/13171686644/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="In my happy place. by cassiemarie, on Flickr"><img alt="In my happy place." src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7213/13171686644_e8c77e7300_o.jpg" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I even spent a few hours cleaning and organizing. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/cassiemarieedwards/13092975035/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="A peek into my extremely scatterbrained sketchbook. by cassiemarie, on Flickr"><img alt="A peek into my extremely scatterbrained sketchbook." src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7399/13092975035_904ae8efce_o.jpg" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I've also been toying with the idea of putting together an illustration portfolio, so I've been doing a lot of preliminary doodling in my sketchbook.<br />
<br />
My friend John Statz and Zachary Lucky also stopped by DSU on their tour across the midwest. My husband booked them to play in a series of acoustic concerts he's been putting together for the University and the Madison Community. I had my Design II Color students put together a series of non-representational small paintings that were inspired by their music to show on screens behind them as they played. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I loved seeing their work outside of the classroom. :)<br />
<br />
I'm also working on another collaboration with another music faculty member. Our next project is a landscape collage with very loose 'rules'. Once they are finished her music composition class will make compositions based on the works.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/cassiemarieedwards/12977876385/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="My Design II- Color students are putting together some pretty neat collages in class today. by cassiemarie, on Flickr"><img alt="My Design II- Color students are putting together some pretty neat collages in class today." src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7336/12977876385_c425f53fff_o.jpg" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I can't wait to see how both the compositions and the collages turn out! CassieMariehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10311320787197493016noreply@blogger.com0
